Pote's Notes - April-May 2018

Greetings Nobles, Ladies & Friends:

Well, here I am pretty much through my first two months as Potentate and, I like to think, starting to get the hang of the job. Wouldn’t it be nice?

As always, and from the start, I am concerned about membership. It is declining for all kinds of reasons. It has been decreasing continuously over recent years. But now, we are not finding enough new members to make up for those that leave or pass away. We need to change this now.

Men, now days, have all kinds of things to take up their time. We older folks did not have that. We were looking for things to do that brought fellowship and a purpose. These days, not so much. We need to encourage new members to join the Nile and be a part of something that brings us together and supports our Shriners Hospitals for Children.

One Unit that has grown its membership is Zem Zem. They had three members a year ago and now have 17 and continue to grow every meeting. One place they are getting their new members from is one particular lodge. From this example, we all need to figure out what avenue is best for you to grow our membership. Is it the lodge that you belong to? This needs to be the biggest item on our agenda.

Imperial has put together a program with the idea of recruiting new members. If you see, or know of someone, who is interested in learning more about being a Shriner and you think they would make a good one, simply go to https://webfez.shrinenet.org/referral. Click on the button that says “Click here to refer a good man!” and enter the appropriate information. From there, either you or someone else will be assigned as their Mentor. The assigned Mentor can contact them and answer any questions they may have regarding membership in our Temple. Or, if you prefer, you can just hand them a petition with your name as the top line signer. Petitions can be picked up at the Nile Office or can be printed from: http://www.nileshriners.org/images/2017/Petitions/2017-Petition-for-Initiation.pdf

If you use this referral system, please come see me next fall, anytime after the first of October, and tell me how it worked out. Whether you were successful or not, stop by and shoot the breeze about this very important issue for Nile. I look forward to talking with you, and even working with you, to come up with ways to grow our membership.

In keeping with my theme, “Put Us Back Together”, I’m interested in getting as many of you as I can to attend events. Here are some upcoming events that you may be interested in:
