Pote's Notes - February/March 2016

I would like to thank you for your vote of confidence in electing me to the Office of Potentate for 2016. It is an honor to have your faith in the ability of those that were elected. I want to have a year filled with open communication, your involvement in decisions, and fun!

I would like to extend my congratulations to the Divan and all the Club and Unit officers being elected to their positions. Thank you, Illustrious Sir David and Lady Karen for your service this past year, and for you prior service on the Divan.

Congratulations to our newly elected Oriental Guide Michael J. Riley and Lady Kimberly, Treasurer Steve Kiely and Lady Rhoda, and Recorder Illustrious Sir James L. Hutchins and Lady Marilyn. Lady Denise and I are looking forward to working with each of you and will support you the best we can during the year.

The 2016 Nile Installation has come and gone. Amazing how fast time goes. Your 2016 Divan, Lady Denise and I want to thank you for being a part of the installation and ball. We had a great time, it’s always fun when we can share it with you.

If you were not there, we had awesome attendees. We were treated to a great display of hors d'oeuvres and they were excellent. Thank you, ladies. The evening started with the Nile Oriental Band and their fabulous musical talents, you truly are the face of the Nile. The Office of the President has its own band, and it’s time the Office of the Potentate has his own band. I anoint them with that distinction.

I thank the Legion of Honor for presenting the colors and salute to our glorious flag. Lady Kathy Ness sang the National Anthem and the Canadian Anthem. She did us all proud, thank you, Lady Kathy.

The 2015 Divan were introduced, and then a great dinner was devoured by all. Thank you, Chef Daniel and staff. The installation began, following dinner with the Nile, Gizeh, and El Katif Shurtah members. My sincere thanks to each and every one of them. The Canadian Shurtah members were exquisite in their uniforms. I was proud of all of you.

Appointees, Appointed Divan, and Club and Units were brought in. The 2016 Divan were introduced, given the Oath of Office, and Fezzed.

Illustrious Sir David Brady, Sr. was presented with his Past Potentates Fez and Jewel. Illustrious then gave his final remarks as the 2015 Potentate.

I then introduced Hannah Schuerman, our guest speaker. Born with a birth defect, she became a Shriners Child amputee at 1-year-old. She is most famously known for her reign as Miss Spokane 2013. I think she should be famously known for being a patient at Shriner’s Hospital. She is an ongoing advocate for the physically disabled community. Hannah is studying nursing in Spokane and is a newly-wed wife to a Naval Officer who is currently on deployment.

We all thought she was truly a lovely young lady. It was amazing to see how well she could dance and twirl around the floor. We were amazed how lively, outgoing, and truly sincere she was in every way. It certainly reminds you how terribly petty our problems seem at times when compared to our Shriner Children. Thank you, Hannah, for coming over. Your speech was wonderful.

I want to thank Illustrious Sirs R. Wayne Duke, George Wohlleben, and Eugene Gilbert for being an integral part of our installation. Master of Ceremonies, Noble Larry Gillespie, was in rare form as the director of the band. I really am sorry if you did not get to see his wiggle, but our grandkids sure got a kick out of him!

I sometimes think that we get away from our Shriners Creed; I wanted to give you a part of what I was reminded of when I took my oath of office:

“As individuals, we pledge ourselves to integrity, virtue and nobility of character. Our intentions will be honorable, our relationships will be trustworthy and our spirits forgiving of each other. As brothers, we offer each other fraternal affection and respect. Together we will support each other in adherence to this creed so that we and our communities will be better because of our fraternity and its principles. As Shriners, we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. We believe Shriners hospitals to be the world’s greatest philanthropy, and we covenant with each other to support its “temples of mercy” with spirit, time, talent and means.”

Remember we are here “for the children”.

See you on the golf course!

Yours in the faith - Illustrious Sir Donald E. Lane.
